Gmail ads moving into the Discovery Ads umbrella

Eras come and eras go, and the era of advertising directly on Gmail via Display campaigns has now come to a close, with a new announcement from Google.

Google Web Story Ads are here, via the Display Network. But will anyone use them?

So, Search Engine Land has an interesting find: the Google Display network will now allow you to take out ads via Google Web Stories. Let's step back: whoa, what are Google Web Stories? In short, it's Google's answer to Snapchat and Instagram Stories: short images, meant to be shared, that are only available on a web interface. Google first called them AMP Stories but has rebranded them Google Web Stories more lately. They appear on the Discover feed, image results, and standard search results. So there are a bunch of pieces of good news about these. Let's look at them.

New Google Ads option to “View local competitive visits and search terms”

I was pleasantly surprised to discover, on the tip from a friend, that Google has silently created a new Google Ads / Adwords help page about an apparently-secretly-launched feature, to view local competitive and search terms. So let's dive into this and see what we can learn from it.

Youtube Introducing Audio-Only Ads

Stop the presses--okay, maybe not quite--Google is introducing Audio-only ads for Youtube. I was setting up Google Analytics for a new campaign, and it automatically forced me to use the new version of Google Analytics, GA4. Okay, such are the times. The interface changed a bit which just meant that some options were hidden under some others, but they were all there. Until... I had to set up the filters for the new Google Analytics property. And there was no filter option!

Facebook is making a non-trivial change and it seems like it is trying to keep it on the down-low. Gil David and others report that Facebook reps have been telling them that they're removing the 28-day click attribution in October.

Facebook finally removes infamous 20% text limit

Big news from Facebook: Apparently, they've removed the famous (infamous) 20% text limit. While the above message was sent privately (apparently; not to me!), it is also mentioned on their official help pages. So, I have to admit: this 20% rule has pained me over the years. In many ways.

Two Major Display Ad Companies Call Off Their Merger

One of the biggest pieces of news in the display and programmatic advertising industry in 2019 was the $2 billion merger of Taboola and Outbrain. But guess what? It's been called off. Why has it been called off? Covid, market conditions, all the usual. That's what they tell us. Of course. But what really happened? A few speculative thoughts and notes, in this case, I have no inside information, so I Truly Have No Idea. So, here goes some guesses.
